A much loved and revered destination in Kerala is Alappuzha. Alappuzha is popularly called as Alleppey and is famed for its beautiful backwaters and the houseboats. People flock here to enjoy the backwater rides on the houseboats through the network of tranquil canals and lagoons. The place also offers a unique experience of floating restaurants on its backwaters. Due to its virgin beauty, the place is also referred to as the Venice of the East.  Apart from the backwaters are the beach, lighthouse and the temples of the city worth paying a visit. A loved festival here is Punnamada Lake’s snake boat races, which is attended by thousands of tourists every year. One must visit this place to have a lifetime experience of the houseboats and the authentic south Indian Cuisine. spots to visit in Alleppey: Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, Vembanad Lake, Mannarasala Temple, Ambalapuzha Temple, St. Andrew’s Forane Church, Pathiramanal, Pandavan Rock, Edathua Church, etc. There is a variety among the many places to visit in Alleppey, from the gratifying view of the sea to the twist and turn the channel of backwaters and jungle streams are things worth seeing- No wonder Alleppey was called the “Venice of the East” by Lord Curzon. The concept of houseboats which is locally called Kettuvallam in Malayalam is a primitive practice in Kerala.
