Bengal Natural History Museum

A treat for the zoology and nature lovers, the Bengal Natural History Museum is one among the must-visit places in Darjeeling. Flaunting the diverse flora and fauna of the state, the museum was established in the year 1903.
The museum was initially a small Botanical Garden, which later expanded to take the present shape. The museum is famed for holding wide varieties of birds with nests and eggs, reptiles and fishes, mammals, insects, etc. The museum beautifully showcases the well-preserved remnants of the dead creatures. 
The museum is divided into numerous sections dedicated to various types of living creatures. One can see in specimens like Himalayan Brown Wood Owls, Northern spotted owlet, Northern Brown Fish Owl, pheasants, flycatchers, woodpeckers, etc in the bird’s section.
Another section holds the preserved bodies of crocodiles, snakes and numerous other reptiles and amphibians.
Other attractions are the specimens of that of Tibetan fox, Tibetan Lynx, Toddy cat, heads of wild buffaloes, panthers or leopards, elephant’s ivory, crocodile, etc. There is another dedicated section for the insects and butterflies.
The museum also displays a wide collection of the flora of the West Bengal region. The specimens very well depict the distribution of the forest type over the lands of West Bengal.
The museum also holds a small library holding books of wildlife and biodiversity interest. One can read some of the rare books here.
Darjeeling Zoo and Himalayan Mountaineering Institute accompany the museum on the site.
