Nalanda University Ruins

One of the top tourist attraction at Nalanda is the Nalanda University Ruins. Nalanda is famed as one of the world’s oldest living cities, who sees its foundation back in the 5th century AD. Nalanda University is famed as one of the ancient world’s great universities and an important Buddhist center of academic excellence too. It is reported that around 685 and 762 AD, about 10,000 monks and students lived here, studying theology, astronomy, metaphysics, medicine, and philosophy. Nalanda was also recognized as an international university due to the efforts of Emperors Ashoka and Harshavardhana, who constructed temples and monasteries here. The university is also famed to be the first residential university of the world and attracted scholars from all over the Buddhist world. The monasteries built here showcases the Kushan style of architecture. So see here is a large courtyard that is surrounded by cells where the monks used to live. Unfortunately, Nalanda was destroyed in the 12th century by Muslim invaders. There are lots of facts and stories about the time of its ruin. The destruction of such a famed place was a great loss. Now, the ruins of this famed university are well preserved and is A Unesco World Heritage site.
