Tribal Heritage

The tribal heritage dance is another attraction of Thekkady. The youth of the Mannan and Paliyan tribes living in the fringes of the Park are eager to revive their forgotten culture and the folklores. They have been successful in documenting the lost traditional dance forms of their cult and are all set to launch the traditional dance programmes with the support of Periyar Foundation. Periyar tiger reserve is a model world wide for the harmonious coexistence between indigenous tribal communities and forests. There are six tribal communities nested in Periar Tiger Reserve namely Mannans, Paliyans, Malayarayans, Mala Pandaramas, Uralis and Ulladans.

The tribal heritage tribal art performance provides an exclusive opportunity to witness the rich cultural heritage of Paliyans and Mannans tribal dance. The visitor encounters colourful indigenous tribal people in their natural habitat. This one hour tribal dance performance also includes a brief introduction to the tribal communities, information on various musical instruments and costumes used for the dance performances as well as a memorable photo session with these tribal communities. Tribal art generally reflects the creative energy found in rural areas that acts as an undercurrent to the craftsmanship of the tribal people. Tribal art ranges through a wide range of art forms, such as wall paintings, tribal dances, tribal music, and so on.
