Indira Gandhi Boat Race is an annual boat race conducted in the Lake of Kochi by the Department of Tourism, Kerala State. The boat race is one of the most popular snake boat races in Kerala.

A stunning water festival held to boost tourism in the state. Passionate oarsmen rowing in harmony to the rhythm of the “Vanchipattu” literally mean the song of the boatman.

People in huge crowd beside the waters can be seen encouraging the participants of the event. Several snake boats participate in the event and among which only some are selected to the final round.

It is organized during the last week of December, and the trophy of this race was commenced in memory of the late Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi.

The arrangements for this unique festival of Kerala start several week in advance. The spirit of the contestants makes the competition exclusive.

Around 150 oarsmen vow to observe strict rules during the game. Each one of them represents a different village. Villagers and wealthy people often take the responsibility of feeding them during practice sessions.

Packed with vigor, the boat race attracts tourists from all around the world.
