Visakha Museum

The Municipal Corporation Museum of Visakhapatnam, more popularly known as the Visakha Museum, is the place that is maintaining and preserving the records of the great history of the city of Vizag. Located on the RK beach road, the Visakha Museum attracts a large number of tourists because many historic treasures and artifacts of Kalinga and Andhra Pradesh regions are displayed in this museum. This is a must-visit site for history enthusiasts.

The Visakha Museum was built at the Dutch Bungalow, which itself is a place of great historical significance. In the 1980s the Urban Development Authority of Visakhapatnam took over the bungalow. The Visaka Museum was unveiled on October 8, 1991, by Mr. N Janardhana Reddy, then Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh

The Visakha Museum has a comprehensive collection of articles related to the port city of Vishakhapatnam. It also consists of several historical pieces on the display that were presented by various other countries. Some of the rare collections held in this museum are portraits of the royal family members of Vizianagaram and Bobbili, cutlery, armor suits, daggers, knives, and muzzleloading firearms, ancient weapons such as steel bows, pistols and revolvers, spears and swords, Greek, Roman and Viking helmets, stuffed animals, coins, documents and manuscripts, memoirs, scrapbooks, silk garments, and maps.

Visakha Museum’s Maritime Wing was established on the Beach Road in the year of 2004. This section of the museum portrays India’s magnificent maritime history and renders information on the extensive maritime heritage of Indian. For both tourists and locals, the maritime wing is considered one of the best places to visit.

The museum has INS Visakhapatnam, INS Sumedha, INS Kamorta, Sudarshini, Mhadei, HMS Trincomalee and other models. Also on display is the Scorpene-class submarine- Kalveri. There are also aircraft types such as Chetak and Kamov on the display. The museum also has many other planes, warships and submarines models. This museum still holds the casing of an unexploded bomb that was dropped during World War II by Japanese.
