Bavikonda

One of the shreds of evidence, showing the rich history of Buddhism, is the Bavikonda Buddhist Complex. It was a pilgrimage spot as well as a monastery. The Bavikonda Buddhist Complex is located on a hill above 130 m from the mean level of the sea, at an approximate distance of 16 km from the city of Visakhapatnam in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, where several ancient wells can be seen which are expected to be constructed during the 3rd century BC to conserve the rainwater.

Several artifacts and remains from the past related to Buddhism were also found during the excavation of this Buddhist complex. Roman and Satavahana coins, iron objects, pottery, tiles, manuscripts, and molded bricks are the pieces of art that can be found here on the top of this hill.

The Bavikonda complex is one of the subcontinent’s oldest and most important Buddhist sites. The site spreads across a large area along with several surrounding hills and consists of several stupas and shrines. The land is adorned by sanctuaries, temples, halls, refractory, galleries, and platforms. Today, for history lovers, this has become a quirky destination. And, due to the presence of several trekking trails leading up to the top of the hill, many trekkers are also drawn to it.

Bavikonda is one of the largest Buddhist and archaeological sites. If you are curious about such mystical locations and want to discover the secret charm of such places, then you have to take a trip to the Buddhist Complex of Bavikonda.
