Thirupparankundram Temple
Thiruparankundram Temple aka Tirupparamkunram Murugan Kovil is a famous 8th-century rock-cut cave temple worshipping Lord Murugan (Subrahmanya). The temple is huge and adorable with many stories related to it. People believe it to be the first temple of Lord Muruga. It is believed to be constructed during the era of Pandyas. The temple houses the sanctums of Subramanya, Durga, Vinayakar, Shiva, and Vishnu. The temple is sectioned into various mandapams, namely, Kambathadi Mandapam, Ardha Mandapam, and Mahamandapam. The mandapam also houses some life-sized sculptures, worth appreciating.
The temple holds 48 brilliantly carved pillars and a pond with numerous fishes. The devotees pray to the lord and also feed the fishes with salt and rice flakes. The other attraction of the temple being, the statues of the deity Shiva and Vishnu facing each other, which may be impossible to find anywhere else. Festivals- The temple commences Annual festival in the Tamil month of Panguni (March / April) and Chittirai festival in April / May.
