Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary

Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary near Sukna is a must-visit place at Darjeeling. Just a few kilometers drive from Darjeeling takes us to this beautiful place adorned with immense natural beauty.
The forest sprawls over 158 sq. km of land and sits in an altitude ranging from 500ft. to 4,300ft. River Teesta and River Mahanadi bound the sanctuary on either side. The sanctuary offers a chance of the Jungle tour by own vehicles. Although the tickets are very reasonable one needs to pay for the guide and camera as well as the other national parks.
The park is adorned with exquisite wildlife like Royal Bengal Tigers, Himalayan black bear, leopards, rare mountain goats (serow), porcupines, golden cats, sambar, spotted & barking deer, Indian bison (gaur), wild boars, monkeys including black-capped languor, etc. There are nearly 36 species of mammals and 243 different species of birds reported in the sanctuary.
Also go looking for Himalayan pied hornbills, peafowls, peacocks, fouls, egrets, kingfishers, flycatchers, racket tail drongo, Assamese macaque, robins, woodpeckers, etc. There are also numerous migratory birds often found dwelling in this park.
The park also holds artificial salt licks, where the animals come for licking salt to fulfill their mineral requirements, which is an appreciable move. The forest also holds numerous watchtowers to facilitate the tourists throughout the forest.
At the entry of the forest is a forest museum that holds the well-preserved remains of numerous dead animals.
Make a note- sanctuary remains closed from June 16 – Sept 15.
