Dolphin’s Nose
Dolphin’s Nose, one of Vizag’s most beautiful places, is a natural wonder, a place of scenic beauty and historical significance. Located between Yarada and Gangavaram Port in Visakhapatnam, Dolphin’s Nose is a hill named after its resemblance to the nose of the dolphin. It is also a wonderful spot for photography.
Dolphin’s nose is one of the Indian Navy Bases. Some areas are under restriction but the most scenic spots are open to the civilians. Especially the view from the lighthouse takes away a breath. Some people even claim that the spot is often visited by a school of dolphins.
Once there was a vast stretch of beach land connecting Vizag town with Dolphin’s Nose before the inner channel was constructed. Today, though, if you were to reach the site by road, you would have to take a circuitous path to the hill.
In the mid-1960s, a lighthouse on the Dolphin’s Nose was built. At this very location, there was an even older one that did not survive the cyclone of 1874. It was built in the 19th century, and it is estimated to be constructed in the year 1860. The old lighthouse’s remnants are still existing and can be seen in the basement’s ruins.
Also at the foothill of Dolphin’s Nose, there has been a famous naval battle fought between the French and the British in 1804 called the Battle of Vizagapatam.
The current light-house helps to track and monitor cyclones from the peak of Dolphin’s Nose. All the necessary types of equipment are installed in it. The lighthouse also provides a spectacular view of the Vizag city and the Bay of Bengal and is one of the must-visit spots.
On a nearby hill, there is also a Temple, a Church and a Mosque. A fishing town by the same name is situated next to the hills which is an interesting place to visit and explore. You can also travel to the Yarada beach, which is nearby the Dolphin’s Nose. The recommended time to visit the spot is between October and March.
