Bojjana Konda

Bojjana Konda is a famous Buddhist heritage site near Anakapalle which is at a distance of about 40 km from the city of Vishakhapatnam. This site was the center of Buddhist culture and teaching a few centuries ago. It is situated in a village named Sankaram that originated from the word “Sangharama” meaning monastery. Bojjana Konda is located at the bank of the Sarada river.

At Bojjana Konda you will get to see many monolithic stupas, rock-cut caves, prayer halls’, meditation rooms, structural buildings that are made of bricks and resting rooms. Several age-old coins and Sitting Budha’s clay tablets were found during the excavation of this site.

You can also see many Budha statues carved on the caves’ rock-face sides. This place depicts the flourishing Buddhist culture of the Mahayana period but also have artifacts from the Hinayana and Vajrayana period.

A panoramic view of the area’s green fields and distant hills can be seen from the hill-top. There are guides available if you are interested in a detailed tour of the place. For a quick visit, you would take about one hour to explore the location. There is also Lingalametta hill nearby, where there are large and small monolithic stupas which are rock-cut and carved on single rocks. Some of the stupas are as tall as the building of two floors.

Here you can find platforms in a semicircular shape for the Guruji or the teacher and platforms in circular shapes for the followers or pupils in the prayer halls. Grooved places on the walls of the rooms can be seen for keeping the lamps. There is a cave with a single rock-cut in four columns and a cave with nine columns with Buddha Statues. Wells which were constructed by cutting the rocks for the storage of water can also be seen. Bojjana Konda is a must-visit for history geeks.
