Thotlakonda
If you want to explore and understand the architecture and lifestyle of Buddhism, Thotlakonda is a must-visit place for you. Thotlakonda’s name is derived from the Telugu words- Thotti (tub) and Konda (hills). There are plenty of rock cutting troughs here. It is located on the beautiful beach road between Visakhapatnam and Bheemili, a distance of 16 km from Visakhapatnam city.
This place was first observed in an air survey of the Indian Navy, located in an area at a height of 128 meters on a hilltop close to the village of Mangamaripeta. The complex of Thotlakonda was excavated between 1988 and 1992. Between the period of 200 BC to 200 AD, this site was highly active. Increasing Hinduism and diminishing maritime trade decreased the activities by the 3rd century AD. Situated within the Kalinga region, this place played a significant role to spread Buddhism to Sri Lanka, Burma, and several other places.
The complex has a simple but elegant architectural style. The meditation centers are designed mainly to offer the monks peace and silence. The positions of stupas are directly in the middle of the compound, and two guards stand at the entrance looking after the hall. Also, there are several Viharas and Chaityas at Thotlakonda. The kitchen and the resting area used by monks give a clear picture of the simplicity of their lives. Sunrise and sunset directions are also marked on the stones.
The old Hinayana culture refractory gives examples of the period’s maritime trade. Monks from far-off places like China, Burma and other countries visiting this Buddhist school came across by the sea route and used to live here for months and years before finishing their studies.
Located above the hill, this majestic and peaceful monastery provides a perfect place to rejoice and even discover sights. Thotlakonda discovery will be one of your’s most enriching experiences. You can take back home lovely memoirs from here.
