The Thirumalai Nayak Mahal sees its construction in the year 1636 AD. The structure was raised by the King Thirumalai Nayak and shows a perfect amalgamation of Dravidian and Rajput styles. The palace holds the prestige of being called the national monument and thus attracts lots of tourists every year. The Thirumalai Nayak Palace was once the residence to the King Thirumalai Nayak. With time, the Palace lost its real shape and extension and now have shrunk to nearly one-fourth of its original size. The architecture of the Palace is marvelous. The excellent stucco work done on the arches and domes of the palace are worth appreciating. There are massive pillars counted to be 248 in numbers to this beautiful palace. At the evening the palace commences the beautiful sound and light show. The main palace has two sections namely, Swargavilasa and Rangavilasa, which houses royal residence, theatre, shrine, apartments, armory, royal bandstand, pond, and garden. The Palace is truly an inspiration from the past. It must be a must not miss a place on your trip to Madurai.
