Sri Sivasailanathar Paramakalyani Temple – Sivasai

Travel for 47 km from Tirunelveli, to reach Sivasailam in Tamil Nadu. the place is famous as it harbors a 500 years old temple- Sri Sivasailanathar Paramakalyani Temple or Sivasailam Temple. The ancient temple sits on the shores of River Gadana and worships Lord Sivasailanathar, a form of lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. The temple is thought to be built by Pandiyas. Apart from the historical and religious importance, the temple is also much talked about due to its beautiful location. There are Velli malai, Mulli malai and Podhigai hills on the backdrop Also an interesting fact about the Shiva Lingam is that there are fine lines over the statue that appear like hair, so is also called Sadaiappar. Apart from Lord Shiva, other deities of the temple are Vinayakar, Murugan, 63 Nyanmars, Dakshina Moorthy, and Natarjar, also Goddess Paramakalyani sits next to the main sanctum. The temple includes various mandapams and many carved pillars. The prime gopuram is huge, having five stories and beautifully decorated with different statues. The temple also includes numerous stone inscription depicting the way of ruling kingdom by different rulers of the area. Another admirable attraction of the temple is the mesmerizing statue of Nandi. People believe that the stone sculpture of Nandi was so finely curated that it came to life, the sculptor then had to stroke his back to keep him seated. There is still a mark of stoke on his back which can be noted. Festivals- Poosam Theppotsavam and Rathotsavam are the main festivals that commence large gathering and celebration annually.
