Vandiyur Mariamman Temple is the 2000 years old, ancient Hindu temple, located near to river Vaigai, in the holy city of Madurai. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Mariamman, and also worships goddess Pechi Amman and Lord Ganesh. The holy temple is thought to be built in 1646 by Thirumalai Nayak, The main attraction of the temple is a huge tank spreader across 16 acres. The temple pond is used by the devotees for performing religious rituals. The pond has its source from Vaigai River through an ingenious system of underground Channels. The center of the tank sees a beautiful Mandapam called Maiya Mandapam (Central Mandapam) housing the Ganesh temple and a beautiful garden. The temple and the goddess sees a special faith in the hearts of the local people. They believe that the Goddess guards them against all the evils and has the power to cure all the disabilities. Festivals- Madurai Teppakulam, Float festival called ‘Theppotsavam celebrated in the Tamil month of Thai (Jan/Feb) are the chief festivals that call great celebration and gathering in the temple.
