Marayoor
Marayoor, the natural sandalwood forests in Kerala located around 40 kilometers from Munnar, is an untouched tourist place in the state. The sandalwood forests are protected areas under the Forest department of Kerala. The remainings from the Stone age and Iron ages is another distinct feature about Marayoor.
Marayoor is a part of Anju Nadu(five lands), which is supposed to be created by the migrants from Madurai King Thirumalainaicker’s kingdom. The dolmens or burial chambers (known as muniyaras in Marayoor) and the rock paintings are the remainings from the Iron and Stone Ages.
There are around 1000 species of flowering plants and a variety of medicinal plants spread across the forest areas. With the largest number of reptile species and avian diversity, the Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary is a biological hotspot. It is home for endangered grizzled Giant Squirrel, Rare White Bison, and a lot more. A ride through this sandalwood forests will be a great experience.
