Fort William
On the eastern bank of the Hooghly River, stands the mighty and historic building of Fort William. This mighty structure witnessed its construction in the year 1696. Ornamented with hundreds of arched windows, this marvelous structure covers over 70.9 acres of land. The building is all decorated with adorable stoneworks. The history of its construction is tragic. Nearly after 10 years of hard work of the laborers, it was realized that the building had some defects and a new one needs to be constructed. Since the year of its existence, this renowned building as served many purposes. Sometimes it was used as the prison for the criminals. And now it serves as a property of the Indian Army and sees army personnel. The amazing architecture of this fort is worth appreciating. The details and the function of the building were given much importance while construction. There is much to be learned about this marvelous structure. The place has a restricted entry as it serves as an important place for the Indian Army.
