Chintamoni Kar Bird Sanctuary
Chintamoni Kar Bird Sanctuary also known as Kayal-r Bagan is situated at south Kolkata and near Narendrapur Ramkrishna Mission. The sanctuary is famed for housing a wide variety of birds, butterflies, ferns, epiphytes, and orchids.
The beautiful sanctuary covers 17 acres of land and lives on the chirps of the birds. The sanctuary stands in an old abandoned orchard. Nearby areas see orchards, bamboo brakes, water bodies, and wasteland. The sanctuary is ornamented by the presence of mango, jackfruit, coconut, palm, tamarind, guava, and many more trees nearby. These plants attract lots of migratory birds to this area.
The place is a paradise for bird watchers. What one finds attractive here is the black-naped monarch, Asian paradise flycatcher, common hawk cuckoo, orange-breasted green pigeon, white-throated fantail, emerald dove, Streak-throated woodpecker, orange-headed thrush, crested serpent eagle, Large-tailed nightjar, ashy wood swallow, lineated barbet and greater flame back. Also, there are rare varieties like Slaty-legged crake, Tickell’s thrush, scarlet-backed flowerpecker, grey-headed fish eagle, scaly thrush, eyebrowed thrush, little spiderhunter, Eurasian woodcock, greater racket-tailed drongo, and blue-throated flycatcher. Besides, one can also spot a jungle cat, civet cat, monitor lizard, jackal, and others.
The place makes a beautiful spot to be visited with family and friends to have some real interaction with the flighters and the wild ones.
