Travel for 42 Kms from Coimbatore Railway Station, to reach the sacred Avanashi town, which holds the famous Avanashi Lingeswarar Temple aka Avanashiappar Temple. The temple worships Lord Shiva. The temple is believed to be built by Sundarapandiya in the 15th century. Later, people also mention the contribution to this temple by Cholas, Pandyas and the Hoysalas. The temple is famed for housing exquisite stone carvings and inscriptions. Near to the main sanctum sits Goddess Karunambika. the interesting thing about the goddess is the scorpion sculpture behind her. People believe that worshipping the goddess along with the scorpion gives relief from the poisonous bites, bad dreams, etc. The holy temple is protected by the Archeological Survey of India. Festivals- The temple commences 12-day long Brahmotsavam in the month of April/May. The temple holds the biggest chariot in southern India.
