Sri Subramanya Swamy Temple – Vayalur

Travel for10.5 km from Trichy Railway Junction to reach the sacred Sri Subramanya Swamy Temple in Vayu. The temple is dedicated to Lord Murugan and is thought to be built by Cholas in 9th Century. The holy temple is also popular by the name- Kumara Vayalur, Adi Vayalur, Vanni Vayalur and Agnishwaram. The sanctum sanctorum is dedicated to Sri Subramanian along with his consorts Valli and Devayani. Adjoining the sanctum sanctorum, lies a temple for Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva here is worshipped as Agniswarar. Neighboring Agniswarar is a holy shrine for his consort Sri Adi Nayaki also worshipped as Munnilai Nayaki. There are many stories related to the temple. You must visit here to hear some. The temple is also famous for housing a unique idol of Lord Nataraja, with both the legs placed on the ground. Apart from offering prayers at the temple, do visit- Sakti Tirtham, a small pond in the front of the temple. Festivals- The temple commences many celebrations throughout the year. Some of which are- The 12 days Vaikasi (May / June), 7 days Skanda Sashti (September / October), 4 days Panguni Uthiram (March-April) and 3-day Thaipoosam (January / February).
