Vedaranyam
Vedaranyam is a town, seeing its place in the Nagapattinam district. The town is famed for the famous Vedaranyeswarar temple it holds and the city embarked its name. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The construction of the temple is believed to be in the 9th century, by the King Aditya Chola of the Chola kingdom. The town was known by the name- “Tirumaraikadu” in the olden days. Apart from the aforementioned temple, various other sacred temples in the town are worth paying a visit, as the Ayyanar Temple, Dhraupathi Amman Temple, Kuzhagar Temple, and Shri Siththi Vinayagar Temple.
Another yet important place to visit here is the Point Calimere Wildlife Sanctuary. the sanctuary sees its establishment in the year 1967. The vast land of about 22 sq km is under the sanctuary’s establishment. Mostly famed for holding the numerous species of birds, the sanctuary showcases vivid varieties of birds and animals.
The town of Vedaranyam holds the pristine Vedaranyam Beach, which is clean, calm and scantly populated beach making it a perfect place for hangout. Apart from the significant contribution of the town in the field of religion and tourism, this holy town has also marked its importance in the books of history. The town also witnessed the Salt march, initiated by C. Rajagopalachari, parallel to the Dandi March by Gandhi in 1930 as a non-cooperation against the charge imposed on salt production. Also visit- Salt Sathyagraha Memorial Stubi, the Ayurvedic Medicinal Forest, the Historical Light House, Ramar Paatham and Ettukudi Murugan Temple.
