Vaitheeswaran Koil

Yet another but the important religious place near Chidambaram is Vaitheeswaran Koil. The sacred town is looked upon for the Vaidyanatha Swamy Temple aka Pullirukkuvelur. The temple worships Vaidyanatha Swamy and Thaiyalnayaki, alang with The Selva Muthukumara Swamy. The temple holds a religious story behind its existence. It is believed that the vulture king -Jatayu, who died while trying to save Sita was cremated here. Thus the temple also holds a unique tank- Jatayu kundam. The temple also worships the planet- Mars (Angaraka).

The notice in the temple is its beautiful five-tiered gopura and large enclosures. Lord Vaitheeswaran, Muthukumara Swamy, Nataraja, Somaskanda, Angaraka and stone sculptures of Durga, Dakshinamoorthy, Surya and Jatayu, see their place near in the inner enclosure. There are also shrines for Thaiyalnayaki, Dhanvantari, and Angaraka.

The temple holds a tank named- Siddhamirtham, wherein the devotees believe that taking a dip will cure all the disease. The temple also holds the inscriptions dating back to the period of Vikrama Chola (12th century CE), the Nayaks (16th century CE) and the Marathas (18th century). Apart from this, the village also holds its grip in the field of palm leaf astrology called Naadi astrology in Tamil.

Festivals- the village welcomes hundreds of visitors during the 10 day Thai festival in January-February, 28-day Panguni Brahmmotsavam, 6-day Aipasi Skanda Sashti in October-November, Vaikasi Mannabishek and monthly Kruthikas.
