Thirumalapuram Rock-Cut Cave Temples

In the Tirunelveli district of Tenkasi, lies two Rock cut temple which has great religious and archeological importance. The temples are thought to be as old as from the 7th century and people used to live here ten thousand years ago. There is evidence of the people worshipping God Shiva in this temple. Even some tools belonging to the Neolithic age have been unearthed here.

There are two temples, One on the north other on the south. The one at North has a beautiful rock carved Shivlinga, that has been eroded over the years. You can also find Brahma, Nataraja, Vishnu and Vinayaka idols, depicting the worship of these gods in the temple. The idols are undergone erosions over time, but the gross structure and the carvings can even be appreciated. The temple in the South has undergone much more insults than the Northern one. But still, you can visit this place to learn about ancient history and explore some of its masterpieces.
