Sri Mannar Rajagopala Swamy Temple
In Palayamkottai area of Tirunelveli lies a sacred Hindu temple of Sri Rajagopala Swamy or Azhagiya Mannar Rajagopala Swami Temple. The temple worships Lord Vishnu in the form of Rajagopala Swamy aka ‘Mannar’ and Vedanarayan Perumal. The construction of the temple is believed to be during the Pandiya period. The temple holds many religious stories relating to it. People believe that the idol of the presiding god was found by the Pandiya king Sripathy while he was bathing in Ganga. He then brought the idol, constructed the temple and opened it for the public by the name of Lord Azhagiya Rajagopalan. The idol of the Lord is giant and graceful. The 15 feet high idol can be seen sitting gracefully in the shrine. Festivals- The temple commences grand gatherings during Brahmotsavam in Panguni (March-April), Garudaseva on Purattasi Saturdays (September-October) and Vaikunda Ekadasi in December-January.
