Shaheed Minar
The Shaheed Minar is a historical monument in Kolkata which is also known as the Ochterlony Monument that was erected in the year 1828.
This 158-foot high tower is the iconic landmark of Kolkata. The monument was erected in the memory of commander of the British East India Company Major-General Sir David Ochterlony. The tower thus initially hold the name Ochterlony Monument.
After Independence, In the year 1969, the government of India decides to rededicated it to the memory of the martyrs of the Indian freedom movement and was thus named The Shahid Minar.
The architecture of the tower is fabulous. It sees the blend of many architectural styles. After a flight of a few hundred stairs, one can reach the top of the monument to have an aerial view of the entire city.
The Minar looks even more fascinating at night when lit up with the colorful light.
