Sarangapani Temple

Sarangapani Temple is an ancient Hindu temple situated in the heart of Kumbakonam. The temple worships Lord Vishnu. The temple derived its name from the words Sarangam and pani meaning bow and hand respectively. The deity holds a bow in the hand. The temple is also known by the name- Tiru Kudanthai and is one of the 108 Divya Desams. The Sarangapani Temple is also important as it is one of the Pancha Ranga Khestras with the other four being Srirangapatnam, Srirangam, Appalarangam, Parimala Ranganatha Perumal Temple and Vatarangam.

The Presiding deity of the temple is Sri Sarangapani Swami aka Aara Amudhan, Abayaryaapthamiruthan, and Utthanasayi. The Sarangapani Temple is thought to be built during the Pallava period. The present structure describes its renovation by Vikrama Chola (1121 AD onwards) and by Nayaks during the 16th century.

The inclusions of the temple are 5 prakaras and a holy tank popular as Porthamarai Kulam. The raja gopuram of this sacred temple is as high as 150 feet and possesses 11 tiers. The central shrine of the temple holds a magnificent scene in itself. One can see the chariot drawn by horses and elephants, with openings on either side, showing the descent of Sarangapani from heaven. Festivals- The temple commences annual Chariot festival during the Tamil month of Chittirai (March-April), Brahmotsavam, a spring festival, and Navaratri.
