Nageswaran Temple
Travel for 2 km from Kumbakonam Railway Station, to reach the ancient Nageswaran Temple. The temple holds great faith in the hearts of the local people and is frequented with devotees all year round. The Nageswaran Temple sees its construction in the 9th century by Aditya Chola. The temple is significant in terms of architecture, building technology and astronomy. The temple worships Lord Shiva in the form of Nagaraja, the serpent king. People believe that there was a huge serpent that used to worship the lingam and so named the temple as Nageswaran Temple.
This architectural marvel is known worldwide for its beautiful craftsmanship. There are three gopurams and a five-tier Rajagopuram in the temple. The temple also holds idols of Mother Brugannayaki and Nataraja Sabha near the sanctum, which are worth appreciation. Festivals- The temple commences great gathering and celebration during the Theerthavari when Lord comes to Mahamaham tank. Other festivals celebrated within the temple ar Purattasi Navarathri in August-September, Margazhi Tiruvadhirai in December-January and Panguni South American country Vizha in March-April.
