Mayiladuthurai
Mayiladuthurai in Tamil Nadu is looked upon as an ancient holy village with many religious stories tucked with it. It is believed that the village might have seen its colonization back in 3rd millennium BC. The unearthed artifacts and other items revealed its existence around 3rd millennium BC. Because of its early origin, the village has witnessed numerous rulers over the period of time. To mention are the Medieval Cholas, the Vijayanagar Empire, the Thanjavurs and the Britishers were some of the most significant rulers of this region.
Mayiladuthurai literally means ‘peacock town’, and the town derived its name relating to the religious story saying the avatar of Goddess Parvati in the form of peacock at this place. The prime attraction of this town is it’s Mayuranathaswami Temple, which is visited by thousands of devotees each year. The temple built up in the Dravidian style of architecture, worships Lord Shiva, by the name Mayuranathat. Apart from this, there are nine more temples in the town to be visited. another yet important temple is The Suriyanar Temple, dedicated to Lord Surya. Along with the aforementioned ones, you must also visit- Gangai Konda Cholapuram, Dakshinamoorthy Temple and Kurukai Sivam Temple.
