Mahamaham Tank
The trapezoid-shaped, holy Mahamaham Tank is one of the largest temple tanks in Tamil Nadu. The tank covers a grand space of half-dozen.2 acres.16 little Mandapams (shrines) surround this holy tank, that is devoted to gods- Brahmatheerthesar, Mukunthar, Thalesar, Rishakesar, Umaipakesar, Nairuthesar, Brahmeesar, Gangatheerthesar, and Seshtra Paleesar. The shrines, as well as the stairs in the tank, are thought to be constructed by Govinda Dikshitar, the chieftain of Ragunatha Nayak of Thanjavur. Inside the tank is believed to be 21 wells, which are in the shape of small spring wells.
The wells are named in the name of celestial deities namely Indra, Yama, Agni, Niruthi, Vayuya, Kubera and Isanya respectively. In between the Vayu and Kubera wells, is the ninth well-named Brahma Theertham. Other wells are named on the names of the holy rivers of the country- the Ganges, Yamuna, Godavari, Narmada, Saraswathi, Kaveri, Tungabhadra, Krishna and Sarayu. Festivals- The holy tank sees numerous celebrations and rituals annually. The most important festivals are Masimaham which falls in the Tamil month of Masi (February-March), yet another is the Kumbh Mela festival.
