Erumbeeswarar Temple / Malai Koil – Thiruverumbur

Travel for 13 km from Trichy, to reach the holy Sri Erumbeeswarar Temple worshipping Lord Shiva. This temple stands on the banks of river Cauvery. It is believed to be built by Aditya Chola in 885 CE. The temple was erected over a 60 ft high hill known by the name Malai Kovil. One can reach there by climbing some stairs. One can note several inscriptions on the walls of the temple, from the Chola period as early as of 10th century. To preserve the uniqueness of this sacred temple, it has now been declared as a protected monument by the Archaeological Survey of India. The temple worships Lord Shiva in the form of Erumbeeswarar. The goddess Parvati is seen in the form of Saurabhya Kudalaambal. The temple also worships Goddess Narunkuzhal Nayaki. There are numerous other shrines also inside the temple. There are sacred tanks inside the temple, known by the names- Brahma Theertham, Madhu Theertham, Kumara Theertham, and Padma theertham. The temple has many stories related to it.
