Draksharamam Temple

Located on the green belt and the eastern side of the river Godavari, Draksharamam Temple is one of the country’s five most influential and most prestigious temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. The construction of the temple goes back to the 9th century. It is positioned at a distance of about 40 kilometers from the city of Rajahmundry and 198 kilometers from the city of Vizag in the Indian province of Andhra Pradesh.

This temple is one of eighteen (18) Shakti Peethas and belongs among the Shiva Pancharamas. The principal deities that can be found here are of the Lord Bheemeswara Swamy and Goddess Manikyamba. This is also the place where the Daksha Yagna had been performed as specified in the Puranas.

Draksharamam is an ideal place for a holy pilgrimage. The landscape around the temple is impressive, and the road trip to the temple is incredible. The temple along its region is also named as ‘ Dakshin Kashi’ with tremendous religious significance.

The architecture of the temple is ancient and intriguing. There are several fables about the creation of this temple. The Shiva Linga, which was in Tarakasur’s throat, broke into five pieces during the Vadha of Taakasura and a piece dropped here. It came to be called Draksharamam afterward. It is also believed that after Sati’s death, the cheek which was the 12th part of her body fell over her. It is now known as the Goddess Manikyamba.

The architectural style of the temple is in the type of a fortress and several pilgrims from all over the world visit this place and are delighted by the attractions it offers. Many celebrations are observed here that also attracts lots of devotees. The Maha Shivarathri Festival in February to March is the busiest time in the temple. Navarathri is also celebrated every year during October. The other festivals such as Kartheeka Monday and Jwalathoranam are celebrated in November.
