Darasuram Airavatheswar Temple
Travel for 8kms from Kumbakonam to reach the small town of Darasuram, popular for its Airavathesvara Temple. The holy temple is thought to be built by Rajaraja Chola II in the 12th century CE. The temple is now a part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site ‘Great Living Chola Temples’.
The temple is famed for its marvelous art and architecture. One can see the 85 feet high vimana of the temple. The front mandapam sees the form of a huge chariot depicted to be drawn by horses. The temple also holds some of the exquisite stone carvings worth appreciating. Near to the Airavateshwarar temple is the temple of the goddess Periya Nayaki Amman.
