Assumption Church / Cathedral
Just a few kilometers from the Vellore Town Railway Station, is the famous Roman Catholic Diocese, The Assumption Church. It sits next to the Bishop’s House. The Church holds a bell tower, which is believed to be the highest in India. Assumption church was built in 1854 when Vellore was made a parish. The Church was announced as the cathedral of the newborn Diocese of Vellore in the year 1952. The Church witnessed renovation in the year 2002 when the old one was demolished and a new one took the place. The huge Cathedral can hold about 3000 people at a time. The inclusions of the Church are- Blessed Sacrament chapel, prayer meeting hall, Glass paintings of 18 important events of salvation history and 15 mysteries of Rosary, and 165 feet height Belfry. The church looks beautiful and is often flocked by the devotees. Festivals- The church summons annual feast on August 15th. Other celebrations of the church include Christmas, Good Friday, Easter and New Year.
