Agneeswarar Temple / Kanjanur Sukran Temple
Travel for 18 km from Kumbakonam Railway Station to reach Kanjanur, where the sacred Hindu temple- The Agneeswarar Temple is located. Lord Shiva is worshipped here as Agneeswarar and Goddess Parvathi as Karpagambal. Town Kanjanur is considered one among the nine Navagraha sthalas located in the Cauvery Delta region. It is dedicated to planet Venus and called Sukran in Hindi. Here Agneeswarar in the form of lingam depicting Lord Sukran. The temple saw its construction during the Medieval Cholas. It later underwent refurbishment by the kings of the Vijayanagar Empire. People also call the holy shrine by the names- Palaasavanam, Brahmapuri, Agnistalam, and Neelakudi.
The striking feature of the temple is that the oil Abishekam performed on Siva lingam gets completely absorbed by the idol. This temple flaunts a five-tiered Rajagopuram and two prakarams. The temple also consists of stone images of Natarajar and Sivakami. The temple also worships Maanakkanjaarar Nayanmaar and Kalikkaamar. Festivals- The temple commences annual gatherings during Mahasivaratri, Arudra Darisanam, Navaratri and Aadi Pooram. special pujas are performed here every Friday to please god Sukran.
