Panoramic backwater stretches, highlands, paddy fields, rubber plantations, a totally literate people have given this district the title: The land of letters, latex and lakes.

Kumarakom: An unbelievably beautiful paradise of mangrove forests, emerald green paddy fields and coconut groves interspersed with enchanting waterways and canals adorned with white lilies. You can find traditional country crafts, boats, and canoes. Ayurvedic massage, yoga, meditation, boating fishing, angling and swimming facilities are available here.

Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary: Located on the banks of the Vembanad lake, this sanctuary is an omithologist’s paradise. It is a favourite haunt of migratory birds such as the Siberian stork, egret, darter, heron and teal. Other common varieties like the wood pecker, skylark, crane, water hen and parrots can be spotted here. A cruise along the Vembanad lake is the best way to experience the sanctuary. Pathiramanal, an enchanting island on the lake can be accessed by boat from here.

Illickal Mala: Numerous mountain streams flow down from the serene Meenachil river. The solitude, the tranquility, the gentle breeze and the star spangled sky are enchanting beyond words.

Marmala Stream: This scenic stream and its waterfalls are together referred to as the enchantress of the jungle. Right under the waterfall is natural bridge.

Vagamon: This enchanting hill station is dotted with tea garden and meadows. The breeding center of the Kerala livestock board is located here.
