Vivekananda Setu
Vivekananda Setu the mighty bridge over the Hooghly River linking city of Howrah, at Bally, to its twin city of Kolkata, at Dakshineswar has got the names Bally Bridge as well as Willingdon Bridge. The bridge was opened for the public in December 1932. The bridge is 2,887 feet (880 m) long.
The bridge serves both road and rail routes. The Railway connects Sealdah Station to Delhi, while the Roadway connects Grand Trunk Road (Howrah side) to Barrackpore Trunk Roa (Kolkata side).
Due to the aging of the bridge, a supporting bridge named Nivedita Setu aka second Vivekanand bridge was constructed parallel to it in 2007, to distribute the heavy load of traffic falling on the primary bridge. So now, the Vivekananda Setu allows traffic movement upstream (Bally to Kolkata) while the Nivedita Bridge helps downstream transport (from Kolkata to Bally).
