Selva Vinayagar Temple
Near the Vellore Town, Railway Station is an ancient Ganesha temple known as Sri Selva Vinayagar Temple. The temple worships Sri Selva Vinayagar and Somasundareswarar. The temple has 11 Swayambhu Vinayagars as Bala Vinayagar, Nandana Vinayagar, Omkara Vinayagar, Karpaga Vinayagar, Chinthamani Vinayagar, Selva Vinayagar, Mayura Vinayagar, Mooshiga Vinayagar, Vallaba Vinayagar, Siddhi-Buddhi Vinayagar, and Panchamuga Vinayagar. The temple is been believed to be constructed by a Maratha minister named Thukoji. He was said to be on his way on Chariot and spent a night there and then the god gave him a dream about his existence there. The minister then unearthed the idols and constructed the temples. One can still see the marks of the wheels of the Chariot of the minister ver the Selva Vinayakar idol. The temple has some unique features that make the place more attractive and interesting. Like, the idol of Bala Vinayagar has still not emerged completely, still showing only the top portion of it, and Selva Vinayakar has an elephant as his vehicle instead of Mooshika. The sanctum has just a flag overhead with no roof. Also, the Selva Vinayakar idol was once all covered with silver but presently two-third of it has vanished indication growing size of the idol. Festivals- The temple commences grand celebration and sees large gatherings during Vinayaka Chaturthi (Aug/Sep) and Shivaratri (Feb/Apr).
