Sarkar Rajbari
If you are looking for a heritage excursion in Shantiniketan, then head directly to the Sarkar Rajbari. It is a 1750’s mansion with wonderful architecture, still in very good condition.
This big mansion is located at the Surul village of Shantiniketan. One can appreciate the typical Bengali architecture in this Rajbari. The mansion belonged to Srinivas Sarkar, a rich businessman in the area. It is famed for organizing the much revered Durga Puja celebration with great joy and enthusiasm to date.
Adjoining the mansion is a small temple complex of the Sarkars. To see here is the Pancha – Ratna (five pinnacled) Lakshmi – Janardhan Temple. The temple shows a fine terracotta artwork to be appreciated. Although the original works have been much eroded it has been tried to restore to some extent.
