Travel for 2 km from Kumbakonam Railway Station, to reach the ancient Ramaswamy Temple. The temple worships Lord Rama, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. The construction f the temple is believed to be in the 16th century CE. by Achutha Nayaka of Thanjavur. The temple flaunts the Dravidian architectural style.

To look in the temple is a Gopuram, a Maha Mandapam and Sanctum Sanctorum. Mahamandapam is decorated with the stone carvings of Vamana Avatharam, Meenakshi Kalyanam, and Sugreeva Pattabishekam. Other to appreciate is the 219 wall paintings in the outer prakaram, depicting the scenes of the holy Ramayana. The temple is so popular that it is often regarded as the Ayodhya of the south. One can see the idols of Rama and Sita in Pattabishekam posture-Coronation scene, with Lakshmana standing next to Rama, holding a bow and arrows. Joining them are Bharatha holding an Umbrella and Shatrughna holding a fan. This is one of the rare temples holding the statues of all the four brothers together.

Lord Hanuman can also be seen singing in praise of the Lord holding a veena. The temple also worships- Alwar Sannathi, Sreenivasa Sannathi, and Gopalan Sannathi. Festivals-the temple commences grand gathering and celebration during Sri Rama Navami on the 9th day after New Moon in March/April. Another important festival of the temple is the Mahamaham festival, which comes every 12 years.
