Point Calimere Wildlife Sanctuary

The famous sanctuary sees its establishment in the year 1967 and was further expanded in 1988 with the influx of Great Vedaranyam Forests and the Talaignayar Reserve Forests within. Calimere Wildlife Sanctuary aka Kodikkarai Wildlife Sanctuary sees its place in a coastal island towards the Bay of Bengal. The sanctuary covers a vast wild land of 21.47 sq. km and sees its place amidst the sea and mesmerizing beaches. The sanctuary is known for its exclusive varieties of Bonnet Monkey, Wild Boar, Monitor lizard, Short-nosed Fruit Bat, Small Indian Civet.

The sanctuary has also gained fame because of its migratory birds like flamingos, waterfowl, etc. One can also spot chital, wild boar, bonnet macaque, Painted stork, blackbuck, terns, plovers, and stilts. Even one can spot Dolphins and turtles if fortunate enough. The sanctuary sees the best of its beauty from November to February.
