Nashik

Pronounce it as Nashik or Nasik, was known as the “land of the brave” while the regime of Shivaji. This ancient holy city in Maharashtra is a magnet for Hindu pilgrims. The popular Kumbh Mela is hosted here once in every 12 years. Nashik is the third largest district of Maharashtra in terms of population and speaking geographically, it has a lush mountainous terrain. It is located alongside the Godavari river and is 180-200 km from Mumbai and Pune.

Nashik derives its importance from its mention in Ramayana, the epic, in which Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana lived in exile for 14 years. The river banks in the city are lined with ghats. Nashik also happens to be home to Buddhist and Jain cave temples dating back to the first century. Saptashrungi is a part of Sahyadri ranges and harbors a hundred and eight water bodies or kundas. Other places worth visiting are Sita Gufa, Panchavati, Trimbakeshwar temples, Pandavleni caves, Dudhsagar falls and Coin Museum.

The city is well maintained in terms of cleanliness and greenery. Nashik also has a high potential when it comes to wine tourism because it’s known for locally produced wine and stunning vineyards in the countryside. Sula Vineyard is one you can’t miss if you’re around!

Nashik is also a part of the government’s Smart City Project so it is getting better developed too. The wine city is well known for chidva grapes and one can find a range of items starting from handicrafts and silver items.
