Fatehpur Sikri, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a captivating historical complex located at 40 km from Agra, India. Built by Emperor Akbar in the 16th century, it served as the Mughal capital for a short period. The site showcases a blend of stunning architecture, intricate craftsmanship, and a fusion of Persian, Indian, and Islamic styles.

Fatehpur Sikri is basically a fortified city predominantly made of red sandstones. The city is home for famous architectures and monuments like Jodha Bai’s Palace, Jama Masjid, Buland Darwaza, and Tomb of Salim Chisti.

The city’s layout and buildings reflect Akbar’s inclusive policies, as various religious and cultural influences are beautifully incorporated. While Fatehpur Sikri was eventually abandoned due to water scarcity, it remains a remarkable testament to Mughal architectural brilliance and historical significance, attracting visitors from around the world.

Highlights of Fatehpur Sikri

  • Diwan-i-Aam: The Hall of Public Audience, as its name suggests, was a place for gatherings and meetings with the Emperor to address public issues. It’s a rectangular pavilion on 49 pillars, facing a spacious open area. The Diwan-i-Aam features a decorative Jharokha chamber, called Takht-i-Murassa. Intricate designs adorn pillars and walls, while ministers sat on a marble platform. The hall is divided by two gateways and three aisles, creating a remarkable space for addressing the public’s concerns.
  • Diwan-i -Khas: Diwan-i-Khas, also known as the Hall of Private Audience built in persian architectural style, served as Emperor Akbar’s private chamber. Adorned with intricate artistry, this splendid pavilion hosted confidential meetings that influenced the empire’s choices. A realm of privilege and secrecy, it reveals the Mughal court’s inner mechanisms through its exquisite architecture and purpose.
  • Ibadat Khana: Ibadat Khana or worship house is the place were spiritual leaders gathered and discussed about their respective worships. This is the place where Akbar laid foundation for the religion he found out Din-e-Ilahi.
  • Panch Mahal: The Panch Mahal, a mesmerizing five-story pavilion, stands as a graceful masterpiece in Fatehpur Sikri. Its delicate tiers and open design create a serene retreat, inviting cool breezes and offering a respite from the heat. The structure’s elegant architecture reflects Mughal ingenuity, making it a captivating symbol of artistic excellence. From the pavilion, you can enjoy a magnificent view of the fort. Right in front of the Panch Mahal lies the Anoop Talab, a peaceful pool that used to be a delightful stage for musical performances in the past.
  • Jama Masjid: Jama Masjid is one of the first building built inside the city of Fatehpur Sikri. Built in the 17th century the place is considered as a pilgrimage centre. Jama Masjid itself is a UNESCO world heritage site now.
  • Tomb of Salim Chisti: The tomb of the Sufi saint, Salim Chisti, is a stunning masterpiece of Mughal Architecture. It’s situated in the mosque’s courtyard. Emperor Akbar had this tomb built as a gesture of honor to Salim Chisti, who predicted the birth of Akbar’s successor, Jahangir. The main structure is surrounded by intricate marble screens. The entrance to the central chamber features exquisite carvings and Quranic inscriptions.
  • Buland Darwaza: The Buland Darwaza, known as the “Door of Magnificence,” stands tall as a symbol of Akbar’s triumphant conquest of Gujarat. This grand gateway was constructed over a period of 12 years and serves as an impressive entrance from Agra to Fatehpur Sikri. Rising to a height of 50 meters above the ground, the Buland Darwaza is a striking fusion of red sandstone, adorned with elegant touches of white and black marble.

How to reach Fatehpur Sikri

Agra is city connected with all major cities by roadways, railways and airways.

  • By Air: The closest airport to Fatehpur Sikri is Kheria Airport in Agra, situated approximately 34.3 kilometers away. It’s a domestic airport connecting almost all the major cities of India
  • By Rail: Fatehpur Sikri is about 40 kilometers away from Agra Cantt Railway Station in Agra. Trains are readily available on a regular basis.
  • By Road: The well-maintained roads of Fatehpur Sikri offer excellent transportation options for tourists. The UPSRTC bus service ensures reliable and affordable travel for visitors, making it convenient for all.

Cabs and buses are available from outside of the railway station and airport to Fatehpur Sikri.

Entry Fee: ₹50 per person for Indian citizens and SAARC and BIMSTEC country visitors.

For other foreign nationals ₹610.

For children below 15 years, entry is free.
