One of the architectural marvel to talk about is The Pamban Road. In the holy city of temples and gods, this id the thing that will make you feel the power of science. The mighty bridge connects the National Highway (NH 49) with the Rameswaram island. It is also the longest bridge in southern India. The Pamban bridge has a roadway and a railway. It connects Mandapam (Place on the Indian Mainland) and Pamban (in Rameswaram island). Both roadway and railway run parallel to each other. The construction of the Pamban Road bridge was commenced in the year 1974 by the Indian Highway department and got completed in the year 1988. The Road Bridge was named as ANNAI INDIRA GANDHI ROAD BRIDGE. The bridge got Anti-corrosive coating painting works in 1992, 2002 and 2013, as it is located in the secondment corrosive environment of the world. The Pamban Road Bridge runs to the length of 2.345 km. The bridge architecture is arch-shaped thus allowing the ships and boats pass beneath its piers (Pillars) without any disturbance, While, The pamban cantilever rail bridge possesses gate like passage arrangement named “Scherzer Roll” in the middle which opens up to give the passage to the large ships. It is recommended to take roadway one side and railway the other side to enjoy the beauty and the serenity of both the bridges.
