Naifaru is the capital and most populous island of Lhaviyani Atoll. Historical reports depict that the island has been habituated for over 400 years. Apart from the tourism and the local shops, fishing has been the long seen occupation of the people of this island. So the island of Naifaru houses some of the best fishermen of the country. Naifaru is said to hold some of the best underwater kingdoms of the Maldives. Divers look forward to the underwater activities and the rich coral life at Naifaru. One can find the incredible school of blue fusiliers, blue stripped snappers, oriental sweetlips, beautiful coral reefs. Snorkelling is the most loved activity here. Naifaru is well known in the Maldives for making handicrafts from mother-of-pearl, a popular souvenir for visitors to the atoll. Fishing is that the main trade here, and therefore the island of Felivaru is home to Maldives’ 1st tuna-canning plant, that opened in 1978.
