Bhaktavatsala Perumal Temple – Cheranmahadevi
Travel for 22 km from Tirunelveli to reach the sacred ancient Bhaktavatsala Perumal Temple. The temple is located on the bank of Thamirabarani River and worships Lord Vishnu. It holds the prestige of being among the 108 Divya desams of Lord Vishnu and is also known as Sapthamirtha Kshetram. The temple is believed to be constructed in the 12th century AD by the Pandyas. The inscriptions found in the temple concludes its presence during the late Chola and Pandiya period. The mighty temple couple has two shrines- One of Bala Krishnan. and other of Bhaktavatsala Perumal. The idols of the deities are charming and graceful. The Lord Perumal stands glorious showing his four hands. The inclusions of the temple are Garbhagriha, Ardha mandapa, maha mandapa, and the exterior mandapa. The temple is decorated with beautifully carved pillars depicting various figures. The site is presently undertaken under control by the Archaeological Survey of India since 1921.
