Koonthakulam Bird Sanctuary
Travel for 31 km from Tirunelveli to reach the popular Koonthankulam or Kunthankulam Bird Sanctuary. The place holds the prestige of being the largest water birds breeding reserve in South India. The place is a piece of paradise for bird lovers. This bird sanctuary covers a random area of 1.29 sq. km. and harbors thousands of colorful birds. One can get amazed by the music of chirping of birds here. The sanctuary gives a very peaceful experience to be remembered for a lifetime. The sanctuary protects the birds and attracts lakhs of migrating birds each year. The tourists get mesmerized by the scenic view made by thousands of birds here. The showstopper of the region is painted stork which attracts everyone’s attention towards her. This place is heaven in January and February when thousands of migratory birds flock here to increase their family. The Babul plantation in the area makes the perfect place for breeding of the birds. On the seasons, one may spot other attractive migratory birds like- Bareheaded Goose, Pintail, Spotted Sand Piper, Green Sand Piper, Green Shank, Coot, White stork, large flamingo, Common Sand Piper, Common Teal, and Pallavan. Other activities to do here- The sanctuary has a variety of inclusions to be explored, like- interpretation center, watchtower, and children’s park.
