Tourist Places in Kollam

Kollam is one of the oldest ports on the Malabar coast. It is the centre of cashew trading and processing. Thirty percent of this town is covered by the renowned Ashtamudi lake.
The main tourist places in Kollam:

• Thangasseri: This seaside village of historic importance has the ruins of an old Portuguese fort and churches built in the 18^th century. The Thangasseri lighthouse which is 144 ft high is open to visitors.

• Mayyanad: Mayyanad is noted for its shrines and temples. The most important of the nine temples here is the Subramanya Temple at Umayanallor. The shrine is said to have been consecrated by the great Hindu philosopher Sree Sankaracharya.

• Ochira: The famous Parabrahma temple of dedicated to the universal consciousness. There is no ideal or deity. Ochira Kali in mid June attracts tourists from far and wide. Ochira Kali is a mock fight enacted between groups of men dressed as warriors. They perform a martial dance standing knee-deep in water.

• Thenmala: The area is covered by dense forests, rubber plantations. An Eco-tourism development project here is the main attraction. Thenmala is also a dam site.

• Picnic Village: This village is located at Matha Amrithananthamayi ashram, along the backwater front, is the main centre of recreational activity. A 200 year old government guest house, an adventure park, a tourist boat club, a children’s traffic park and a yatrinivas are all housed in this vast tourist complex.
