Tipu Mahal And Hyder Mahal
The popular Vellore Fort houses Tipu Mahal and Hyder Mahal. The Tipu Mahal is grand with 180 rooms and a central pillar hall that attracts everyone’s attention. While the grander is the Hyder Mahal giving space to more than 200 rooms. The history says that it had been a residence to Tipu and his family during the war against the British. A war broke on July 10, 1806, between the Indian sepoys and the European barracks, the headquarters of the Indian warriors were this fort. After this Sepoy Mutiny, the British decided to transfer Tipu’s sons and daughters to Calcutta. The Tombs of Bakshi Begum, widow of Hyder Ali and Padshah Begum, Tipu’s wife, who died in 1834 are also located near the Fort and can be visited on the trip to the Fort. The palaces now serve as a high-security prison so are closed for the common public. It once saw an opening in 2006, as a part of the bi-centenary commemoration of Vellore Sepoy Mutiny.
