Thimmamma Marrimanu
Located at a distance of 120 kilometers from Anantapur, Thimmamma Marrimanu is a huge banyan tree. It is situated about a distance 25 kilometers from Kadiri in the Indian province of Andhra Pradesh. It gets its name from the Telugu words,’ marri’ which means’ banyan’ and’ manu’ which means’ trees.’ covering about an area of 5 acres, this site was listed in the Guinness Book of World Records in 1989 as an example for the largest tree throughout the world. Thimmamma Marrimanu is believed to be more than 550 years old with about 1100 roots.
Under the tree lies a small temple that is dedicated to Thimmamma. According to the local Telugu legend that she was the child of Sennakka Venkatappa and Mangamma, who was the couple Setti Balija. She was born during 1394 AD. In 1434 she married a Bala Veerayya who died. After her husband’s death, Thimmamma committed “Sati.” Additionally, it is also believed that the fire of the northeastern shaft originated from this particular tree.
It is claimed that the banyan tree sprouted at the location where her funeral pyre ascended. The people in this area strongly believe that the very next year they will have a child if a childless couple worships “Thimmamma.”
This tree’s name has been retained since ancient times by local people. People visit this place to venerate, rejuvenate their souls and to relish in the serene and relaxing atmosphere. Also, the ride to this place is exciting for visitors. The route to reach this place passes through several beautiful fields and little villages which is a fun experience.
