St. Paul’s Cathedral
St. Paul’s Cathedral is one of the ancient worship centers for the Christians of Kolkata. The present Church was constructed to replace the comparatively smaller St. John’s Church. The Holy Church was opened for public on October 8, 1847. The church suffers two massive earthquakes namely in 1897 and 1934, thus had undergone many renovations. Built-in Indo-Gothic style, this historic church stands as a piece of architectural marvel and attracts nearly all tourists visiting Kolkata. The Cathedral holds the prestige of being the first Episcopalian church in Asia. The interior of the Cathedral is even more inspiring. There is a huge nave, majestic altar, and chancel to witness. The walls are ornamented with carvings and paintings depicting historic moments and events of Christian history. The cathedral complex also holds a library with some of the oldest books to mention.
